Welcome to the National Pay Equity (NPEC) website

The National Pay Equity Coalition (NPEC) was an Australian group of feminist activists who campaigned between 1988 and 2011 to advance gender equity in pay and employment.

A significant part of NPEC’s work involved:

  • The drafting of submissions to industrial relations tribunals, parliamentary inquiries and commissions
  • Interventions and advocacy work involved appearances before industrial tribunals and policy inquiries.

As well, NPEC committees drafted and distributed publicity campaign leaflets, flyers and press releases, letters to parliamentarians and newspaper editors. The full range of NPEC’s archives is stored in the State Library of New South Wales.

Topical issues addressed by NPEC included award restructuring, enterprise bargaining, wage discrimination, gender-based undervaluation and parental/family leave.

This website provides links to searchable digitised copies of 50 of the submissions drafted by NPEC members, often in conjunction with other Women’s Organisations.

The website also provides links to:

  • Papers from the Conference out of which NPEC emerged
  • An example of a legacy of NPEC’s work — the ‘Spotlight’ tool designed to aid recognition and valuation of less visible skills, helping overcome gender-based undervaluation of work in feminised occupations.
